CBC 2013 Results

The 2013 Putah Creek Christmas Bird Count began clear and cold and ended sunny and warm. The 81 participants marked one of the higher totals in recent years. They combined for 156 party hours, traveling 76 miles on foot, 324 miles by car, and 6½ miles by boat and by bike. The early frigid hours were marked by 8 ¼ hours of owling. We found 146 species, the highest in a decade and tied for second for all time. The only addition to the count was a subspecies: “Thick-billed” Fox Sparrow. This form is known to overwinter in small numbers in chaparral of the Coast Ranges, so it is a welcome and overdue addition to the count. It should be looked for (and listened for) in future years. Record high counts were set for 10 species: Greater Scaup (2; 3rd count record), Pacific Loon (a remarkable 4 swimming together; 3rd count record), Peregrine Falcon (5), American Crow (2,142), White-breasted Nuthatch (184), Brown Creeper (37; this is an expanding and now breeding species in the region), Northern Mockingbird (219), Townsend’s Warbler (3, including 2 together), “Slate-colored” Fox Sparrow (3), and White-throated Sparrow (10). Record high counts were tied for 3 other species: Sora (6), Cassin’s Vireo (1, 3rd count record), and Black-throated Gray Warbler (1). . No low records were set. Thanks to all the area leaders, potluck organizers, and others who helped make this a great CBC.
