Education
The Yolo Audubon school outreach program began in the spring of 2002 at three local elementary schools in Woodland, Winters, and Dixon. Thirty 5th and 6th grade students were involved in three after-school lessons on birding, habitat, conservation, and human interventions, followed by three Saturday morning field trips to lcoal birding spots, including Lake Solano, Davis Wetlands, Beeman Ranch, Hedgerow Farms, and the UC Davis Arboretum.
In Fall 2002 Yolo Audubon was able to sponsor two children from the Woodland school to attend the Central Valley Birding Symposium with their mothers.
In Spring 2003 we have expanded this program to two new schools, one in Esparto and one in Knight’s Landing. The program continues to grow and has proved enormously successful.
Yolo Audubon supported the program through the purchase of binoculars, field guides, snacks, and by providing volunteer teachers and drivers. We are hoping to expand the program to two or more local school districts this academic year. We welcome the participation of interested volunteers! Please contact Sue Lamb, Education Chair, at (530) 666-2798 for more information about volunteering.
