    Field Trip

  • Date: 02/05/2012

  • Sunday, February 5 Robinson Road: Raptors & Plovers
Join us for a trip to the pastures of southeastern Solano County to search for over-wintering raptors. We will search fields, perches, farm equipment and the skies. Prior trips have yielded Prairie Falcons, Merlins, Golden Eagles, Ferruginous Hawks, Rough-legged Hawks and Mountain Plovers. We hope to see these and many more species during this trip.
Beginning birders are strongly encouraged. Bring binoculars, water, snacks or lunch and layers for winter weather. Please bring a scope if you have one. Plan on carpooling for this trip as most of the trip involves driving, little walking is anticipated. Meet at the Marketplace Shopping Center (near Big 5 Sporting Goods, 1301 W. Covell just east of Hwy 113) at 7:30am, returning by early afternoon. Leader, Sharon Kirkpatrick 758-9143 after 7pm or sleclark@ucdavis.edu.

    Robinson Road

The trip was favored by sunny skies, barely a breeze and Super Bowl Sunday traffic – very little!
All told, we were able to observe 10 species of predator/raptors plus numerous Loggerheaded Shrikes Of particular note was Prairie Falcon perched on top of the high power tower at Jepson Prairie. The cooperative bird struck several poses, flew and returned to the perch allowing everyone in the group excellent views. Fifty species were observed by group Ferruginous Hawk and Mountain Plover, both regular (never numerous) winter visitors, were absent.
