    Field Trip

  • Date: 10/26/2010
  • Time: 08:00:00 AM
  • Come along to see the early surprises in this river delta region this Autumn day. We will be in search of the newly arrived wintering ducks, shorebirds, specially those wonderful Sandhill Cranes. Plan on walking along the Riverwalk Trail to seek passerines such as sparrows, towhees and wrens, conditions permitting. This is a good trip for all level of birders, beginners are welcome.

Meet at the Park and Ride lot off Mace Boulevard (NE of Hwy 80; behind Ikeda’s Produce) at 8:00 AM. We will carpool down I-5 south of Elk Grove spend the morning returning to Davis by 2:00. Bring water, snacks and lunch; binoculars will be available for both adults and children.

Trip leader is Sami LaRocca, (530) 908-0288 (cell).

    TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

Today our group of six enjoyed a slow birding trip. On the microwave tower on Bruceville Road the well-documented Peregrine Falcon waited for us and did a demonstration of his flight skills. We walked the Lost Slough Trail boardwalk first. Here we were able to hear a Virginia Rail in the thick tules. Only a small variety of ducks were seen; Cinnamon Teal, Northern Shoveler, Pintail and Green-winged Teal, Black-necked Stilts and many Northern Harriers. Flying overhead we saw Sandhill Cranes come in and were able to get good looks at several groups. Following lunch break we walked out the River Walk Trail where we got good looks at Pied-billed Grebes, Green Heron, Moorhens and a variety of sparrows and blackbirds. A low total of only 33 species were seen.
