    The BIg Chase

    Field Trip

  • Date: 10/02/2010
  • Time: 06:00:00 AM
  • Fall migration should be in full swing and there should be many shorebirds, raptors and passerines to see. The locations that we visit and the rare birds that we “chase” are dependent on what has been reported on the Northern California RBA and other regional listserves.

In the past, we have observed over 100 species on this trip including such “goodies” as Prairie Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler and Clay-colored Sparrow. We are looking forward to another action-packed and fun-filled day this fall!

We will meet at 6:00 AM in the Park and Ride lot off of Mace Boulevard (Northeast of Highway 80; behind Ikeda’s) in Davis. Bring a lunch and drinks and dress in layers. Be prepared for a full day of birding. Rain cancels this trip. Your leaders will be Kevin Guse and Sid England. Contact Kevin Guse at (916) 514-0685 for more details.

    TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

There were few rarities around, so we decided
to focus on the Bodega Bay area. The day started
off a bit cool, windy and overcast, but the afternoon
was partly cloudy and warm. We birded Campbell
Cove, Owl Canyon, the rail ponds, Bodega Harbor,
Diekmann’s Store, Doran Park and Schollenberger
Park in Petaluma. Red Knot and Pigeon Guillemot
were good finds at Doran Park and we had a very
cooperative male White-winged Scoter there as well.
On the harbor, we had the rare opportunity to observe
three cormorant species (Brandt’s, Double-crested and
Pelagic) in the same binocular field! After we left
Bodega Bay, we pulled over enroute to Petaluma to
observe a beautiful immature Golden Eagle. We ended
the day with spectacular views in the late afternoon light
of four Pacific Golden-Plovers at Schollenberger Park!

Thanks to all for a great trip!
