Dragonflies
Field Trip
We will travel to the UC Davis Riparian Reserve on Putah Creek and then to Cache Creek just west of Woodland to observe some of the diversity of Odonates (dragonflies/damselflies) to be found in Yolo County. These two creeks have different creek-bottom substrates and thus slightly different ode communities. Dancers, bluets, rubyspots, darners, clubtails, ringtails, skimmers, clubskimmers, pondhawks, dashers, gliders, meadowhawks and saddlebags are among the wonderfully-named “odes” that we can expect to see. We will hopefully catch a few of these predatory insects for close inspection (and release). Photographic opportunities will also be numerous.
Meet 8:00 at the Davis Big 5 Sporting Goods parking lot (Marketplace Shopping Center, Covell and Sycamore). We will plan on returning here by 3pm. Bring binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, sunglasses, shorts or pants you can get wet, sandals or water-friendly footwear. A camera is optional.
A note on the terrain – at Putah Creek we will be walking on the trails that follow the creek and allow access to the creek side habitat where the odes like it. At Cache Creek, we will need to climb down a fairly steep dirt path to access the creek then walk on gravel bars and wade in search of the dragons.
