Tricolored Blackbird Tour
Field Trip
Bob Meese will be leading a field trip to no fewer than 2 and no more than 4 Tricolored Blackbird colonies to introduce tricolor conservation efforts and to see and hear active tricolor colonies.
Tricolored Blackbird has been proposed for listing on state and federal endangered species lists multiple times, due to population declines brought on by numerous factors. As a near-endemic, it is well known locally, and the most colonial land bird in North America. Of interest to Yolo Audubon members is the fact that in the recent past, the most productive colonies have been located here in Yolo County.
An emphasis will be to view colonies in diverse stages of development to illustrate how the birds’ behavior can be used to indicate whether the birds are nest-building, incubating, or feeding young. Bob hopes to take participants to colonies in Yolo and Yuba counties, with a possible stop at a colony in Colusa County. The field trip will take 4-6 hours, but participants wishing to view only local colonies may choose to do so. There will be opportunities for much discussion and for photography, but close-ups of individual birds will be difficult to obtain. Our meeting time will be 7 AM. This trip will originate in Davis at the Lone Tree Plaza at the intersection of Poleline and Covell in front of CVS Pharmacy. There is coffee at the nearby fast food joint, in case anyone needs/wants it.
