Local Shorebirds
Field Trip
Join Yolo Audubon for a morning of birding during shorebird migration. We will meet 7:00 AM at the Park and Ride lot off Mace Boulevard (NE of Hwy 80; behind Ikeda’s Produce) and travel to one or more areas near Davis to look for and study several kinds of sandpipers, plovers, waders, terns, and associated birds of the seasonal mudflats. The most likely destination will be the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area with a brief stop at the Davis oxidation ponds. We will return to Davis around 12:30 or 1:00. Though not a strenuous trip, expect to walk on uneven paths. Bring sunscreen, hat, water, and a spotting scope if you have one.
This trip is not appropriate for young children. Call either Alison Kent (530-297-7622) or Roger Adamson (530-219-2067 or 753-3338) for further information.
YAS Trip Report
Aug 7, 2010, Yolo Shorebirds
Two enthusiastic birders, Frank and Ann, joined Alison and Roger to search out local shorebirds at the Davis Wetlands and other nearby locations. We found a total of 15 species of plovers, sandpipers and allies; the best was perhaps a single Red-necked Phalarope on Wastewater Lagoon in the Davis Wetlands. We had a surprising moment several minutes after a large group of Long-billed Curlew flew over when a single small curlew feather gently fell into our midst. For our 5 hour trip including the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area we totaled 77 species. Leaders Roger Adamson & Alison Kent.
