Burrowing owl

    Hawk Hill

    Field Trip

  • Date: 10/17/2009
  • Time: 06:00:00 AM
  • We will start by heading to Rodeo Lagoon/Beach to scan
for near-shore migrant and local ocean birds, such as shearwaters, jaegers, murres, loons, phalaropes and sea ducks.
The lagoon can be good for shorebirds, waterfowl and
terns and the surrounding coastal sage scrub and riparian
habitats can hold good numbers of landbird migrants. It’s
Marin County, so almost anything is possible!

At some point in the morning we will head up to Hawk Hill to observe the raptor migration. Species we will likely e see include Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s hawks, Red-tailed hawk, American kestrel, Turkey vulture and Northern harrier. Other less common species that we should see are Merlin, Peregrine Falcon and Red-shouldered Hawk. If the weather conditions are good, we should have a good raptor show. Meeting time is 6:00 am at The Marketplace Shopping Center at the corner of Covell and Sycamore in Davis (park near Big 5) and travel down to the Marin Headlands, which should take between 1.5 – 2 hours. Bring binoculars, scope, camera, water, lunch, sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat. Be prepared for anything from chilly/breezy/foggy to sunny and warm weather. Layers! We will plan on leaving Hawk Hill at around 3:00 pm to head back to Davis. Contact the leader, Zach Smith at (619) 672-0685 with any questions.
